WHAT IS A DOOR LOCK?

A door lock is a mechanism designed to keep doors locked or shut, depending on the user’s preference or inclination at the time and can only be opened with a key or a combination (series of manipulations), depending on what type of lock it is.

They are thought to have originated near Nineveh in the Near East, with the oldest lock discovered in the ruins of Khorsabad Palace dating to over 4,000 years old. The lock was of the pin tumbler type, which is more commonly known as the Egyptian lock.

WHO INVENTED DOOR LOCKS?

According to Wikipedia, the earliest patent for a double-acting pin tumbler lock was granted to American physician Abraham O. Stansbury in England in 1805. However, today’s version, designed in 1848 by an American named Linus Yale Sr, is still in use.

PARTS OF A DOOR LOCK.

A door lock is divided into four main parts: the cylinder, the bolt, box and strike plate.

The cylinder is the part of the lock where the key is inserted. To put it another way, the cylinder is the hole where the key goes. Once the door is locked, spring-loaded pins prevent the cylinder from opening. To open the cylinder and open the door, the pins are inserted in their appropriate positions by the grooves on the key.

The bolt, also called latch, is the part of the door lock that extends into the door frame and prevents the door from opening once it has been shut. In general, there are two types:

(i) the spring bolt held in place by a clip and released to unlock and lock the door, and

(ii) the deadbolt, which can only be locked or unlocked with a key or knob on one side of the door, as it does not have spring-loaded mechanisms. Due to this, the deadbolt is generally considered to be the more secure type of bolt.

The box is the part of the door lock that houses the latch or bolt on a door frame. It is usually rectangular and secures the bolt once the lock is engaged.

The strike plate is a piece of metal attached to the door frame, usually on the box as extra means of securing the bolt and also as a means of guiding the bolt from the cylinder to the box on the frame.

WHO INSTALLS DOOR LOCKS?

A locksmith is a person who works with all kinds of locks, from door locks to window locks, car locks, safe locks and so on.

It is their duty and responsibility to install, repair, adjust and rekey any lock, as well as assist people who may have locked themselves out of their homes and offer consultation services to people on the lookout for good security systems.
